Down to the dunes after the blizzard (Plum Island, MA)
The first storm of January dropped a normal amount of snow with abnormal winds to drift it around. Even with temperatures dropping to 12F the trek down the beach was worth it because of the unusual wind direction. Normally a nor'easter blows snow back from our north-south beach; however, this was a rare "nor'wester", so the snow drifted over the dunes onto the beach.

A fresh fall of snow from the 12/21/09 storm:
provides interesting patterns in the clear sunshine today:
and we see that the coast is starting to freeze up (Newburyport MA):
and the geese are standing on the ice:

Vacation Day #3 from the New England theme of this blog...
Started out foggy in Williamsburg VA, then went to Yorktown VA famous for Revolutionary War battle. Lots of history in coastal Virginia, kind of like a New England South! After all they settled Jamestown near here in 1607, the first permanent English colony in the New World.
